Monday: Minimalistic or Magnanimous?

Today, I had a coaching session with a successful business owner whom I have worked with for several months. We have gone through several topics over that time regarding team dynamics, whether to pivot to a new product, relationships with investors, balancing family life with entrepreneurship… Today was the first time he wanted to talk about irritability and exhaustion.

I always make sure that I reflect back on the exact concern at hand and then ask which topic it is that needs to be addressed first. After some contemplative silence, he wanted to talk about feeling so EXHAUSTED.

It is Monday. Monday is a time for fresh goals for the week: renewed energy and focus.

We are inundated with quotes about MOTIVATION, MINDFULNESS, and MEDITATION on Mondays.

But sometimes Mondays don’t line up that way. Perhaps the weekend was BUSY or CRAZY BUSY or TRAVEL CRAZY BUSY.

Enter the MINIMALIST MONDAY. If you are irritable, tired, sluggish, cranky… shift down into low gear and get ONLY what you need to get done and then give yourself permission to rest.

As business owners, we don’t talk about things like this. We talk DAILY GOALS, LEAD GEN, CLOSE RATIOS, FULFILLMENT, TIME TRACKING, REACH, INFLUENCE, oh my!

But for those of us who want to MAINTAIN SUSTAINABILITY (both at home and at work) and not crash into serious BURNOUT, then we need to know what our MINIMALIST DAY would look like, when to take it, and how to set ourselves up with permission to take one GUILT-FREE.

“Remember,” I told him, “We are still in a pandemic and emotional exhaustion is real and being exhausted is part of the pandemic.”

Have a MINIMALIST MONDAY means different things to different people. Today we talked about a sleep routine; the Oura Ring (which I love); hydration (especially at the beginning of your day); some quiet time doing what you love (not what the partner loves, or the kids love); and daily outdoor movement like a nature walk.

The main message to him was KEEP GOING: gear down when needed, then shift back up when ready.

Think about DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS. Using your gears effectively maximizes your engine and protects your brakes while beautifully controlling your drive.

And isn’t that what we all want: a beautiful and fulfilling drive through life?
