Leaders—Please Stop Avoiding Tough Conversations.

I have coached leaders at every level—from first-time managers to seasoned executives across industries and countries.

Recently, I spoke with a Director about a team member who had developed a negative attitude that was starting to impact team culture.

After asking a few clarifying questions, the real issue became clear:

> No regular 1:1s.
> No structured follow-up.
> No clear guidance when expectations weren’t being met.

In other words: no clarity, no accountability, no framework.

I’ve been on both sides of the table—as an employee, contractor, supervisor, and CEO. And here’s the truth: without written agreements and consistent conversations, things get messy fast.

Here’s the simple system I suggested (and that I use myself):

- Weekly/Biweekly 1:1 time in a neutral space—undivided attention, every time.

- Shared meeting template—filled out by both before the meeting.

Include key sections such as:

1. Refresh (update me-what’s going well and not so well)

2. Niggles (British world for challenges, plus, it reminds me of Giggles, and can we just have a laugh about some of these issues, because the other options are not good 😆)

3. Blue Sky Thinking (fresh ideas, creative solutions)

4. Feedback (kind, genuine “good, bad, ugly” from both parties about each party)

5. Agreement (action items + deadlines going forward by each person)

6. Appreciation Always (for each other)

This template becomes a LIVING ACCOUNTABILITY TOOL.

It builds clarity, prevents misunderstandings, and strengthens trust.

At first it feels awkward—but soon it becomes something leaders and team members look forward to.

It means that each party is doing their best to set each other up for success.

And, that’s what real leaders do, right?

We set people up for success and want others to do the same for us.

The leaders who implement this system report HUGE improvements in culture, communication, and follow-through. Oh, and BTW, people stop quiet quitting. 🤫

👉 Want to see the template I use and how to introduce it to your team without resistance? DM me and I’ll share it with you.

Make it a great day today! 😊
